Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS1) CCD Upgrade.
Simon Tulloch, RGO
Latest Data from Re-furbished instrument, 14/10/97
Solar spectrum obtained with the upgraded FOS instrument. Three pinholes
were positioned along the spectrograph slit
resulting in three primary/secondary spectral image pairs.

The FOS1 instrument from the INT is currently undergoing a detcetor upgrade
at RGO. The new CCD, a
Lesser thinned FT512 device will offer higher QE and sampling of the
spectra. The CCD measures 512 x
1024 pixels. Pixel size is 15um. The surface treatment is Passivated
Platinum, the same as used with the
Loral 2K CCDs. The gain in performance over the previous GEC CCD should be
considerable; the FT512 has a QE of 77% at 400nm.
The improvement in Spectral response can be seen in the accompanying
curve

The aluminium disc on the right hand side clamps the CCD onto its
cold finger support.
