RGO Detector Group

Pre-amble

The Detectors Group at the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO), Cambridge is responsible for the building, testing and commisioning of low-light level CCD (Charge Coupled Devices) cameras for the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes. These comprise the 4m William Herschel Telescope(WHT), the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope(INT) and the 1m Jacobus Kapetyn Telescope(JKT). we have, over the past 5 years, been involved in procuring devices to up-grade the ING detector capability.

INT JKT

Until about 1990, the camera heads on all the ING telescopes were equipped with devices of, supplied by EEV Ltd, and ranged from the 800x1142 to the 2220x1142 pixel devices. During the early 1990s it was decided to undertake a re-furbishment of the detector capability, in particular an improvemnt to the Blue response of the devices then available.
