1. Summary

This document summarises the changes made to the latest version in the W23 release tree of the WHT Telescope Control System, W23-1-4, to produce the release tree W25. The W24 tree has not been released, it contains experimental code to allow autoguiding while differential tracking is in progress.

4. Deliverables and Installation

• The CMS classes necessary to build TCS versions in the W25 release tree are defined in Section 8, they are also defined in the version files in [WHT_LOGIN.VERSION].
• CMS libraries containing the source code for the TCS, the PLOT and CAMTEST utilities, and the build procedures are held on LPAS3; the root directory for the CMS libraries is defined by the logical name SOURCE_DIR.
• The release notes document for the W25 release tree (this document) is stored in ~docs/tcs/whtrel/tcs-whtrel-25/tcs-whtrel-25.html
• The Postscript file for the WHT User Manual is at http://www.ing.iac.es/Astronomy/observing/manuals/ps/tcs/wht.ps and also at http://www.ing.iac.es/Astronomy/observing/manuals/ps/general/wht_user_v20.ps.gz and the Latex source is at ~mpf/docs/tcs/wht_manual/wht_old.tex . The Postscript file does not contain the changes made during the last year or so. The User Manual is being updated, and will be available both as a pdf file and an html file.

5. Reasons for release

W25-0-0

New features

• The TCS FITS packet has been modified to be more like the VAX TCS packet. All meaned values have been replaced by values collected at the start and end of the observation. The effective mean airmass is retained. Details of the TCS packet can be found in INS-DAS-26.
• The TCS startup procedure dismounts all NFS mounts and attempts to remount the required system. The TCS DRAMA task will send an ALARM to the talker log if the required mount was not successful.
• The default azimuth transition and tracking radii are now global variables that can be changed with gsexam.

Defects fixed

• FR 14723: TCS EQUINOX header not FITS compliant

W25-0-1

New features

• The azimuth transition radius (between the square root and the linear regimes) was reduced from 31 arcsecs to 20 arcsecs. This change was made to reduce the likelihood of azimuth oscillations when slewing to a source near the zenith. It may also reduce the incidence of oscillations induced by a large offset.

W25-2-0

New features

• The login menu has changed - the options displayed depend on whether the TCS is running or not. Setting and displaying of the OBSSYS symbol has been removed, as it is obsolete.

W25-3-0

New features

• Up to 5 cloned displays are again possible. (VMS 7.3-2 needs more pagefile quota to create windows.)

Defects fixed

• FR 16631: Calibrate not correcting t/s pointing

W25-4-0

New features

• A new keyboard layout for the handset is introduced, which will allow full control of the TCS from a Sun keyboard. Some function keys have also changed. The new layout is given below.
