TCS ALPHA REPLACEMENT for the WHT
Version 2.1 Draft instructions (will refine after trial)
In the WHT Control Room
- If LPAS5 is still accessible, shut down LPAS5 using the SHUT
account from a telnet session; the SHUT account cannot be used
from the Alpha's console. Take all defaults.
In the WHT Computer Room
- LPAS5's system box is in the old CAMAC's rack beside the communications rack in the computers
room.
- The LPAS5 unit is to the bottom of the rack. It is labelled
LPAS5.
- Next shelf from the bottom is for disks and the tape drive. This way disk's SCSI chain can be accesed from both machines.
- The LPAS5 spare unit is on the next shelf, on top of the disks . It is labelled
LPAS5 SPARE. It will be left powered off during normal operations.
- When lpas5 has shut down, you should see >>> prompt
on the console.
- If the >>> is not present, use the reset button on
the front (it's recessed, so use an object like a pen)
- Power off the system box (switch at the back). Power off the
attached disks and tape unit.
- Disconnect all cables from LPAS5 system box.
- Move all the cables, one by one from lpas5, to lpas5 spare. Pay special
attention to the two network cables.
- Power on LPAS5 spare. It should run power on diagnostics and
then boot.
- System's console is on the table in the back of the rack beside lpas3. It's clearly labeled as LPAS5.
- When fully booted there will be a login display on the
console.
In the WHT Control Room
TCS
- Log into LPAS5 as WHT_LOGIN
with usual password
- Start TCS as normal.
Unix ICS
- There shouldn't be any need to restart the ICS.
- Check that the Unix observing system still communicates with
the TCS, using the command tcs page to change TCS info
display page.
- Take an exposure and check TCS headers appear in the log
display.
- Perform general checks on the TCS. Leave telescope tracking.
There are checks for autoguiding in the DE notes.
- Take an exposure and check correct RA & Dec appear in the
log display.(Could also check FITS headers).
Notes for software group
- LPAS3 is the TCS development machine. It has a CAMAC interface
and is also used as the spare machine for the INT TCS. It
doesn't have the same hardware or software configuration as
LPAS5. LPAS3 shouldn't be used as a direct replacement for
LPAS5.
- LPAS5 has two network connections. 10Mb/s is used for the
public connection for address lpas5.ing.iac.es (currently
161.72.6.74). 100Mb/s is used for a private connection to the
bridge computer. The ip address of lpas5 on this private network
is 192.168.22.168 (on lpas5 there is local name lpas5priv). Use
ping from tcsbridge to check this private connection.
- Since the LPAS5 spare and LPAS5 have the same ip addresses,
only one can be powered on at once.
