VMS 7.3-2 Patches

Downloading patches

Visit the patch website.
If you have not visited this site before, you will need to register and log in.
Under Individual Patches, choose OpenVMS
Step 1: select alpha and v7.3-2
Step 2: select Browse Patch List from drop-down menu and then click on search>>
Click on the latest Master list: ALPHA_V732_MASTER_ECO_LIST and check to see if there are any new patches. If there are, print the page as a reference. Read the entry for each individual patch to see if it is relevant, and note which patches need to be downloaded. The latest Update Kit should always be applied.

Log in to the development Alpha as SYSTEM and go to the vms732 patch directory:
SET DEF SYS$SYSDEVICE:[ECO.VMS732]
use anonymous ftp to the site ftp.itrc.hp.com, then
cd openvms_patches/alpha/V7.3-2
set type image
get kitname.pcsi-dcx_axpexe
set type ascii
get kitname.txt

Repeat until all patches have been downloaded.
Patches for layered products, eg. TCPIP, DECwindows, compilers, are in a different area, to access them from the login directory:
cd openvms_patches/layered_products/alpha
if the local directory is [ECO.VMS732], change the local directory, eg. for TCPIP type:
set def/local [-.tcpip]
and ftp the required files as above.

Alternatively, ftp the patch files to a Sun or PC, but then you must ensure that the files are in the correct format. The file attributes may need resetting.

Decompressing the patches

The patches are compressed; to decompress them go to the patch directory and type
RUN filename.pcsi-dcx_axpexe
and take the default destination.
This will produce a decompressed file with an extension of .PCSI

Installing the patches

Ensure there is an up-to-date image backup of the system disk before applying any patches.
Log in as SYSTEM, disallow logins by typing set login/inter=0, get any users to logout, then stop TCPIP (@SYS$STARTUP:TCPIP$SHUTDOWN).
Go to the VMS732 patch directory: SET DEF SYS$SYSDEVICE:[ECO.VMS732] .
Determine the order in which to apply the patches by reading the .TXT files and noting whether a particular patch needs any other patches to have been installed previously.
Use SET HOST/LOG=filename.log 0 and log in as SYSTEM again - this will keep a log of the installation procedure in filename.log in the SYS$MANAGER directory.

Reboot when finished. Test a TCS version in simulation mode to check there are no problems. If all is fine, then the TCS Alphas can be patched. Copy the patch files to the TCS Alphas and follow the installation instructions above.

Update the patch log.
