To perform a standalone image backup to another disk

This procedure will not work on a shadowed disk.

Shutdown the Alpha and boot from the OpenVMS CD :
>>> boot -flags 0,0 dka400
Choose option 7. Execute DCL commands and procedures
This will give a $$$ prompt.

The following example assumes that DKA200 is the disk to be backed up and disk DKA300 will contain a copy of DKA200.

• $$$ MOUNT/OVER=ID DKA200
• $$$ MOUNT/FOR DKA300
• $$$ BACK/IMAGE/VERIFY DKA200: DKA300:
• $$$ LOGOUT

Choose option 8 (Shut down) when done.

Boot from VMS 7.3-2 disk, watch the startup messages for any errors.

To perform a standalone image backup to tape

Shutdown the Alpha and boot from the OpenVMS CD :
>>> boot -flags 0,0 dka400
Choose option 7. Execute DCL commands and procedures
This will give a $$$ prompt.

The following example assumes that DKA200 is the disk to be backed up and the tape drive is MKA500.

Load a DDS-3 DAT tape, then initialise and mount the tape to enable compression :

• $$$ MOUNT/OVER=ID DKA200
• $$$ INIT/MEDIA=COMPACT/OVER=(EXP,ACC,OWN) MKA500: LPASn
• $$$ MOUNT/FOR/MEDIA=COMPACT MKA500

Start the backup :

• $$$ BACK/IMAGE/RECORD/VERIFY DKA200: MKA500: yyyymmdd.BCK/LABEL=LPASn
• $$$ DISMOUNT MKA500:
• $$$ LOGOUT

Choose option 8 (Shut down) when done.

Boot from VMS 7.3-2 disk, watch the startup messages for any errors.
