A separate page shows a summary family tree, For other information, see the links on the family-tree home page.
Within each section below, information is given about each of our ancestors in that generation (i.e. 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 of them respectively). Information about previous generations is included in the last section.
Within a given generation, ancestors (in bold type) are listed in the order: father of father..., mother of father..., father of mother..., mother of mother... etc. Offspring are listed by age, oldest first.
The tree is based mainly on information from:
Each link in the tree, between a given ancestor X and his/her parents A = B, is deduced on the basis of matches between things known about X, e.g.
As of January 2009, the identities of all 4 pairs of great-grandparents is secure. There's uncertainty about only one of the 8 pairs of great-great-grandparents: Thomas James = Mary Burton ('probable'). Of the 16 pairs of great-great-great-grandparents, 3 are unknown (surnames James, Tierney, Robinson) and 3 are only 'probable' or less certain (surnames Hallam, Burton and Strain).
The censuses (entries were sought for each direct ancestor in each census 1841-1891) typically give for each member of a household at a given address the name, age, marital status, relation to head of household, occupation and place of birth. The handwritten census entries are transcribed here as they appear, with no correction for any apparent spelling mistakes. Illegible entries are marked '?' if uncertain, and '??' if unguessable (correct spelling may later become clear after referring to other sources of information).
Note that in the 1841 census, ages over 15 were rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5.
Abbreviations:
acc = according to B = Belinda b, d = born, died bap = baptised C = Chris D = Dad M = Mum MD = Margaret Davies RC = Robert Chapple TT = 'Thacker Towers' webpage ? = doubtful; ?? = very doubtful (or unguessable transcipt from a record) xxxx = unknown first name or last name (or both) [] = editorial comments (i.e. not information from the original source; or indicates the source which reported a given piece of documentary evidence) '=' = married to (or partner of)
Typographical conventions:
Large font = family tree, as deduced from source informtion,
with names of direct ancestors in bold font.
Small font
= source information (from censuses etc.).
The words '(see above)' after the name of a direct ancestor indicates that information about him/her is given under his/her entry in the previous section (i.e. one generation later in time).
Click on a name or a portrait to explore the interlinked pages of family portraits [but don't expect too much - there are a few bugs, and the quality of some of the images needs improving].
The information in the tree was collected with the help of Belinda, Mum and Dad.

Joseph's 1849 marriage certificate names his father as John Strain (bricklayer), which matches the information in the 1851 and 1861 censuses (Joseph isn't mentioned in the 1851 census, probably left home by then); the 1861 census (see under Joseph) gives his place of birth as Alcester. Verdict: probable. 1861 census: Sarah (80, superannuated, 'formerly seamstress'?, 'crippled'?), Elizabeth (36, daughter) were at Cools Lane, Alcester. All born in Alcester. 1851 census: John (72, bricklayer), Sarah (70, needlemaker), Elizth (28), Emma Cook (16, niece, needlemaker) were at 10 Bleachfield St, Alcester. 1841 census: John (60, bricklayer), Sarah (60), Elizabeh (35) and Rhoda (20) were at Bleachfield St. |
Evidence that Thomas = Sarah are the parents of our ancestor Harriet:
Harriet's 1849 marriage certificate names her father as Thomas Handy (painter), consistent with the 1861 census below; the marriage certificate gives an address Harborne [consistent with Carver St?]; Harriet appears in the 1851 census with husband Joseph Strain; the 1861 census mentions a Drusilla Strain. Verdict: conclusive. 1891 census: No entry for Sarah. 1881 census: Sarah Handy (83, widow, coal dealer) and daughters in law Emily (59, widow, coal dealer's assistant) and Emma Elizth. (28, widow, steel pen maker) are living at 10 Carver St, Birmingham (mun ward St Pauls). All born in Birmingham. 1871 census: Sarah (73, widow, domestic duties) and a boarder are living at 10 Carver St. Born in Birmingham. At 1 back of 10 Carver St lives another Handy family: Benjamin (52, painter and paper hanger), Emily (49, pressworker), George M (22, painter), Thomas (20, silver polisher), Elizabeth (18, pressworker), all born in Birmingham. [Benjamin is probably the son of Thomas, see 1841 census.] 1861 census: Thomas (62, house painter), Sarah (63), Harriet (17, granddaughter, servant), Drousilla Strain (4, granddaughter, scholar) and a lodger (Jane Cullan, 62, widow, laundress) were at 10 Court Carver St, Birmingham (mun ward All Saints). Thomas was born in Warwick, the rest of the family in Birmingham. NB Drusilla Strain was also recorded as being present at 43 Carver St (Joseph Strain's household), so she must have taken a walk on census day. 1851 census: Thomas (52, painter and glazier), Sarah (53), 'Hariet' (25, married), Joseph Strain (28, married, baker) and Harriet (7, gdaughter of Thomas) were at 10 Carver St. All born Birmingham except Thomas (Warwick), Joseph (Alcester). 1841 census: Thomas (40), Sarah (40), Benjamin (20, jeweller), Thomas (15, 'Ap') were at Pope St, Birmingham. All were born in same county. |
Evidence that William = Sarah are the parents of our ancestor Charles:
Charles was born in Huntspill ~ 1834, matching the Charles Came in the 1841 census. Came is a rare name outside the Huntspill area, and in 1801 there was only one Came household in Huntspill (census found online). Verdict: conclusive. 1871 census: No entry for William. 1861 census: William (73, general labourer), Sarah (66, seamstress) were at Sloway? Lane, Huntspill, Somerset. William born in Huntspill, Sarah in Chilton Polden, both in Somerset. 1851 census: William (63, farm labourer), Sarah (55, tailoress), David (23, farm labourer) were at How Way, Huntspill. William and David were born in Huntspill, Sarah in Chilton. Other Came families on same census page: George (61), Elizabeth (59); James (67), Betsey (71); John(30), Sarah (42), Jane (2), John (11 months). 1841 census: William (50, ag lab), Sarah (45), Sophia (15), Edwin (20, ag lab), David (13), Charles (7) were in Huntspill (no street address). All born in same county. There are 3 more Came families on the same census page. Parish records: Belinda confirmed this through the parish records. Public tree on ancestry.co.uk: Chris Bennet's tree (4030 people) gives the names of Charles' parents and siblings. |
Evidence that Joseph = Maria are the parents of our ancestor Emily:
Emily's 1841 birth certificate names her parents as Joseph Southall (glassblower) and Maria Corbett, and gives her address as 18 Eyres St, matching the information in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. Verdict: conclusive. 1891 census: Thomas (53), Caroline (43), Caroline (24), Amelia (20), Maria E (18), George (15), Ellen (12), William H (11), Frank (9) and Harry H (7) were living at 1 New Spring St, All Saints (professions as noted above). 1881 census: No entries for Joseph or Maria. 1871 census: Joseph (62, retired glass blower), Maria (63), Amelia (22), Maria (20) were at Ylav?? door, Pollene? Hill, Aston Manor. The previous entry in the census is for the household of Joseph (b ~ 1833), presumed to be the son. The census information for his wife and children have been entered above. Joseph was born in Dudley, Worcs, Maria in Bracknell, Berks, and Amelia and Maria in Birmingham. 1861 census: Joseph (52, retail mercer), Maria (53) and Amelia (12, scholar) were at Lidge? Row, Birmingham. Places of birth as in 1871 census. 1851 census: Joseph (42, glass blower), Maria (43), John (20, glass blower), Joseph (18, die sinker), Eliza (15), Thomas (13, glass blower), Emily (9, scholar), Amelia (2), Maria (5 months), were living at Eyre St, Birmingham. All born Birmingham except Joseph (Dudley) and Maria (Brockness?, Berks) [poss. consistent with Bracknell]. 1841 census: Joseph (30, glassblower), Maria (30), John (10), Joseph (9), Eliza (5), Thomas (3) and Emily (2 weeks) were at Eyre St, Birmingham. Joseph and Maria were not born in this county. The previous entry is also for a Southall family: John (50, glass blower) and Fanny (50). 1847 ratebook: 17 Eyre St (and 18, but no other house) are property of Fanny? Southall. 1840 ratebook: 17 belongs to John, 18 to Joseph, so John is probably Joseph's father. 1836 ratebook: 17? is the property of John Southall. |

Evidence that Edwin = Hannah are the parents
of our ancestor Mary:
Ray Lambourn's document mentions Mary (1843 - ) and siblings Liza, Emma, Nell, Tom, and mentions a marriage to a Jack Andrews. The names Mary, Emma, Thomas and Andrews match the information given in the 1841-61 censuses. Several public family trees give parents Edwin = Hannah (b Bidford 1818) as the parents of these children. Verdict: conclusive for Hannah, very probable for Edwin (supporting documentation for the public trees needed). 1861 census: John Andrews (37, nail caster), Hannah Andrews (43, nail caster) [assumed formerly Whitehouse], Thomas Andrews (11, brass founder), William Andrews (9, umbrella maker), John Andrews (7, scholar), Lisa Andrews (3, scholar), George Whitehouse (23, bellows maker), Emma Whitehouse (22, box maker), Mary Whitehouse (17, house servant) and Mary Stevens (76, house servant) were at No. 1 house back ct, 6 Howard Place [close to current Hill St, near New Street Station], eccl. parish St Jude. All were born in Birmingham, apart from Mary (b Bidford). 1851 census: Anna (34, head of family, laundress), and children George Edwin (13, bellows maker), Emily Mary (11, scholar), Mary (7, scholar), Thomas (10 mo.) and John Andrews (25, lodger, nail-caster) were living at Court 6, House 9 Old Inkleys (eccl. district St Jude). All had surname 'Whitehouse' apart from John Andrews. All were born in Birmingham, apart from Anna ('Bilford', probably Bidford). 1841 census: Anna Whitehouse (35 or 25, laundress), George (3) and Emma (2) were at Court 3, Brewer St, Bordesley, Birmingham. All were born in the same county. [The mis-transcription of 25 for 35 results in Anna's birth date being recorded in the online 1841 census as ~ 1806 instead of ~ 1816.] The 1841 England census records Bozards in 3 households, one being in Warks: Ellen (20), living with ~ 8 unrelated individuals in the household of a 55-year-old publican at 20 Bread? St (St Paul). Profession 'J.F.'??. There are Boswards in several households, including 4 in Warks, all in Bidford: Benjamin, labourer (40) = Ann (45), children Ruth (5), Eliza (2) Job, agricultural labourer (55) = Hannah (30), children Thomas (12), William (9), Henry (5) John, labourer (20), living with a George Taylor Sarah, no profession given (63) Hannah's parents (and maybe Ellen's) may be one of the above couples. Family knowledge: Ray Lambourn's document 'The Robinson family' opens with a line 'c 1843 Mary Whitehouse b. (sister of Liza, Emma, Nell, Tom m. [space] Andrews, Jack...' Eldred/Tebbitt public tree on ancestry.co.uk: States that Edwin was b 2/3/817, married (21/5/1837, Harborne) Hanna Bozard (b 1818 Bidford), children George Edwin (b 20/11/1837, m Emma Madely), Emily Mary (b ~ 1840), Mary (b 1844), Thomas (b 12/1849). Morrall public tree on ancestry.co.uk: States that Hannah Bozard re-married, to John Andrews (1823 - ), and that they had children Thomas, William, John and Lisa. Places today: The Inkleys was an area to the west of New Street station, bounded by the current Hill St, Navigation St, Suffolk St, Queensway and Smallbrook Queensway. The properties were slum dwellings, demolished 1881, replaced by John Bright St. |
Evidence that Henry = Frances are the parents of our ancestor John: John was b in Bloxwich ~ 1850, which matches the information in the 1851 and 1871 censuses; he's an iron-worker, consistent with the information in the 1871 census. Verdict: conclusive. 1891 census: No entries for Henry or Frances. 1881 census: Henry (58, coal miner), Frances (54), Frances (19, dress maker), James (17, iron worker) and Thomas (15, iron worker) were at 117 Bloxwich Rd, Walsall Foreign, Walsall. Henry and Frances were born in Bilston, Staffs, the children in Bloxwich, Staffs. 1871 census: Henry (48, colliery deput), Frances (45), John (21, forgeman iron?), Samuel (19, forgeman iron?), Henry (16, forgeman iron?), George (12, forgeman iron?), Frances (9) and Thomas (5), were living at 20 Pratts Bridge, Walsall Foreign, Walsall. All the children were born in Bloxwich, and the parents as given in 1881. 1861 census: Henry (38, coal miner), Frances (34), Joseph (13, coal miner), Samuel (9, scholar), Henry (6, scholar), Richard (4, scholar), George (2) were at Walsall Road, Walsall Foreign. The parents were born in Bilston, Joseph in Sedgly, and the other children in Bloxwich, all in Staffs. 1851 census: Henry (28, ironstone miner), Fanny (25) [presumably Frances], Eliza (5, scholar), Joseph (4, scholar), John (2) were at Turnpike Rd, Bloxwich, Walsall Foreign. Henry and Fanny were b in Bilston, Eliza and Joseph in Sedgly, and John in Bloxwich. 1841 census: John (20, miner), Emma (20), Henry (20, miner), Ann (10), Henry (18 months) were at Monmoove? Green, Wolverhampton. All born in this county. Family knowledge: The additional information about Thomas York (1866 - ) is from Ruby (1985). ancestry.co.uk: The surname of Frances, and all the information about her parents, and about the parents, siblings and half-siblings of Henry, is taken from public member tree butlerdot5 (94 people). |
Evidence that William = Ann are the parents of our ancestor Comfort: Comfort was b ~ 1856 in Darlaston, matching the information in the 1861 and 1871 censuses (and Comfort is an unusual name). Verdict: conclusive. 1881 census: No entry for William. There's an Ann Fisher (62, widow) with a lodger at 12 side of Spring Row, Handsworth. Born Walsall, Staffs. 1871 census: William (54, labourer), Ann (49), Comfort (15), illegible daughter (14), Thomas (13), son (12), were living at 16 Bloxwich Rd, Foreign of Walsall, Walsall. William and Ann were born in Dudley and Walsall respectively. The older 2 children were born in Darlaston, the younger 1861 census: William (45, labourer), Ann (41), Emma (16), William (14, furnace boy), Joseph (13), Richard (11, scholar), Comfort (5, scholar), Jamar? (4), Stiner (2) and Albert (1) were at 31 Old Birchills. William was born in Dudley, Worcs, the rest of the family in Staffs: Ann, Stiner? and Albert in Walsall, the other children in Darlaston. 1851 census: William (34, furnaceman), Ann (29), Emma (6), William (4), Irsth? (3), Richard (11 months) were at ??? All the children were born in Darlaston, the parents as given above. |
Evidence that Richard = Mary are the parents of our ancestor
Joseph:
See below. Verdict: very probable. 1851 census: No Richard Benn in the on-line census, but there is a Richard Bann, and the entry on the original image appears consistent with 'Richard Benn', (??, labourer, stone-breaker) at 136 Bakehouse Lane, Lutterworth. 1841 census: The 1841 census records a Richard Been [probably an error in the original entry] (54, agric labourer) and Hannah (22). Mary (60) is recorded as part of Joseph's household that day (see below). Other sources: Robert Chapple provided the information about Richard = Mary Murby's other descendants (i.e. other than through Joseph). Thacker traces his family back to Richard = Mary Murby, via daughter Hannah (b 1817). He has provided a detailed timeline for Richard Benn (~ 1784 - 1856). |
Richard (~ 1783 - 1856) was in turn the son of Richard Benn (b 1752, d Lutterworth 1820 (buried in St Mary, Lutterworth)) = (5/1/1778 Long Itchington) Ann Sutton (1753 - ), children:
Evidence that Richard = Ann are the parents of our ancestor
Richard:
See below. Verdict: very probable. Sources: Robert Chapple provided the information about Richard = Ann Sutton's other children. Margaret Davies provided a similar lineage (no branches), giving the dates of birth and death of the older Richard as (1762 - 1815). Thacker thinks that we are not descended from the Richard (1762 - 1815), but from Richard (? - 1819?). |
There are only 7 Benn households in Warwickshire in the 1841 census, and the family of Richard (~ 1784 - 1856) were in 1813 in Long Lawford (the village next to Church Lawford), which suggests that even if Richard (~ 1762 - 1815) is not the same as Richard (? - 1819?), they are likely both descended from the Church Lawford line of Benns.
Evidence that Jeremiah = Martha are the parents of our ancestor
Jeremiah:
see below.
Verdict: very probable. Source: Margaret Benn (1927 - 2004), with the help of Lord George Herbert, of the local manor. Parish records?? |
Evidence that James = Mary are the parents of our ancestor William:
The parish records suggest this. Verdict: very probable (but documentary support for the Bennet tree is needed). 1841 census: James listed as 85-year-old fisherman?? Parish records: Belinda suggested this from an inspection of the parish records, but wasn't sure. Public tree on ancestry.co.uk: Chris Bennet's tree gives the names of William's parents and brother. |
Both Belinda's tree (from the parish records) and Chris Bennet's tree agree that: James' (1758 - ) parents were Thomas Came (1731 - 15/4/1817) = (8/4/1755) Mary Palmer (1733 - 1813). Her parents were Henry Palmer (1710 - 1747) = Hester Hole (1712 - 1748). Thomas' parents were Gervis Came (1695 - 28/7/1754, clerk of parish) = (m 1/5/1724) Joan Tidball (1706 - 1751). Gervis' parents were James Came (672 - 1700) and Joan (d 1726). All of these people were born and died in Huntspill.
Evidence that Alfred = Ann Elizabeth are the parents of
our ancestor Edwin:
The Eldred public tree gives the names and dates of birth of Edwin's siblings and parents. Verdict: probable, needs confirmation. Public trees on ancestry.co.uk: The Eldred/Tebbitt tree gives the names and dates of birth of Edwin's siblings and parents. It gives the places of birth of Alfred and Ann as Austria (!) which sounds unlikely. The Mann public tree confirms the names and dates of birth, but gives the birthplace of Alfred as Birmingham. The Mann tree states that Alfred's parents were Joseph (b W Midlands ~ 1760) = Mary (b W Midlands ~ 1765). |
Evidence that George = Susanna are the parents of our
ancestor Henry:
See below. Verdict: unconfirmed. ancestry.co.uk: The information about the parents, siblings and half-siblings of Henry, is taken from public member tree butlerdot5 (94 people). |
Evidence that Richard = Mary Ann are the parents of our
ancestor Frances:
See below. Verdict: unconfirmed. ancestry.co.uk: The information about Frances' parents is taken from public member tree butlerdot5 (94 people). |
