STP Configuration

To view a more extensive explanation of the Spanning Tree Protocol, please refer to page 39 of the 3Com Switch 4900 reference manual. All the configurations for the network devices within the ING where done using their web interface, and basically is as easy as activate the STP. See the table below for details on how to do it depending on the model of switch.

Device

Actions

3Com switch 4900

Main page -> Device View -> bridge -> Spanning Tree -> Setup

Change State to 'Enabled'
Change Version to 'Spanning Tree'

3Com switch 4400

Change State to 'Enabled'
Change Version to 'Spanning Tree'

3Com switch 3300

Main page -> Configuration

Change Spanning Tree to 'Enable'

Although all the configurations of STP in the network devices are the same, there are four devices where this configurations differ a bit. There is a field called Bridge Identifier (page 43) that defines which device is the central reference point for the STP system. The lower this value is, the better for that device to become the BI. Here are the settings.

Device

BI value

gb1wht

0

gb2wht

4096

gb1int

8192

gb2int

12288

all the rest

32768 (default value)

This establishes the order to become the central reference point for the STP. In the case of these four devices, to the actions defined in the configurations table set 'Bridge Priority' to the correct value.
