Plan description

The actual TCS computers at the WHT lpas3 and lpas4 are connected to the ING network using their onboard network card which are 10Mbps. An upgrade to 100Mbps is needed on each computer. The steps to do this change will be as described here.

  1. Find the appropriate Digital network cards. We should have some at the INT clip centre.

  2. Since the alphas to be upgraded have a PCI CAMAC controller installed and that the OS does not support shared IRQ's, the graphics card has to be removed and a VT220 via serial port has to be used instead as the console. Find two VT220 and build two D9 serial cables with appropriate lengths to install lpas4 by the communications rack and lpas3 on the desks by the bottom of the WHT computer room.

  3. The TCS computer in use in the WHT has the two serial ports available used, one by the TV and the other by the AUTOGUIDER. Find a D9 or D25 switcher with at least two ports, it will be attached to serial port one in the alpha to select between AUTOGUIDER or VT220 as needed. To prevent problems while switching between autoguider and console, it would be a good idea to recompile the TCS software to talk to the autoguider on port 2 and to the TV on port one. The TV as autoguider is not used at all today.

  4. Once the network cards are installed Marion Fisher has to do some changes on the network subsystem of the OS. If needed she will be able to access the computer console using a portserver. This feature will be prepared using ts1wht port 9.

  5. Both computers has to be tested to act as a TCS with the new configuration.

  6. With the computers up and working with a 100Mbps NIC, a new documentation on how to replace a TCS in the WHT and INT has to produced.

Project prerequisites
  1. Availability of time to do the hardware installation and tests.

  2. Marion has to available to perform the needed changes on the network subsystem.

  3. Availability of 100Mbps ports on the observing system part of the network.

External dependencies
  1. TCS Alpha replacement documentation

Planning assumption

  1. During the installation period the TCS will be unavailable.
