as you know we've been using the ftp area for making (mainly) service data available to observers. This has been going quite well and the observers have responded with enthususiasm. Providing data through ftp may result in a slightly higher work load for the support astronomer, but overall it saves work (no need for tape copying) and money, and it provides a much improved service to the community.
Given our positive experience so far, I think we can decide to use anonymous ftp as our prime way of providing service data to astronomers, starting on 1 Feb 1997.
There is one catch, and that is the required disk space. Last week we ran into the problem of having no more space available in the ftp area and the SA had difficulty creating sufficient space. To prevent this we have to:
