Modems on Roque Site : 405636 (preferred) and 405575
The Modems At The Roque Site Are
Not In Use Due To Lightening Damage
Use Sea Level Office Modems 425455
And 425456
There have been a number of problems with the modem line 405575 and
in response to that a number of changes have and are being made to provide
a better service.
A modem is now installed at the Roque site on 405636which provides
a more stable connection.
Line 405575 will stay in service with one modem connected but can still
cause problems and the line and or modem will probobly still need to be
reset occasionally
Note that the 405575 line is a cascaded line, if you receive a continued
ringing with no connection, then it is possible that the modem is in use
and you have been connected to the next line in the chain, for which at
present there is nothing connected. In this case try line 405636.
Both these lines provide dial back to listed individuals.
Note that these lines provide a Decnet connection at a maximum server
speed of 9600bps. even though the line speed can run at up to 14400 baud.
Roque VT100 Connection Procedure.
You Require a Terminal Emulator such as Kermit
configured for VT100 emulation.
Make a connection by typing command ATDT405575
(tone dialing) or ATDP405575 (Pulse dialing) or use a script, see software
manuel.
For call back your PRIMARY PASSWORD is your 6 digit home telephone
number. After entering your primary password the modem will disconect you
and then call you back. You will then be requested for a SECONDARY PASSWORD
which is your Surname in uppercase. On pressing the"enter"
key you should recieve a normal Decserver prompt.
For those users who do not possess digital exchanges and have problems
on being rung back. This is sometimes caused by your local exchange not
hanging up the line before the callback is initiated causing your line
to appear busy. If you suffer accutly by this problem then you should try
issuing a command to your modem, immediatly on disconnection after entering
your PRIMARY PASSWORD, to hang up your local line. Most modems respond
to ATH0 .
For those without dial back then in reply to the PRIMARY and SECONDARY
password prompts you should use the password "access"
to both. At which point you will be connected to the Decserver prompt.
to connect to the vax type: C LPVE
At the Username prompt if you want a service other than LPVE then then
type the service name you require i.e. lpss1otherwise
connect to LPVE in the normal way using your vax username and password.
If you typed a service name at the username prompt you will be logged
on to the vax and then a telnet session to the service you specified will
be created giving you the logon prompt for that service.
To terminate your connection close and logout of your session and subsessions
back to the Vax terminal server prompt. Type your modems escape code usually
three '+' signs in quick succession. You should in most cases get a response
from the modem of 'ok'. To close your connection you should now type ATH0
to hang up your telephone line. If your terminal emulator does this for
you then use that.
Modems in Sea Level Office: 425455 and 425456
From today 1st October 1996 the two sealevel office modems are connected
directly to the sparc lpss20 and as such new facilities can now be offered.
A direct 14400 baud line connection to
the sparc (soon to be 28000 baud)
The Sparc connection to the modem is 38400,
so with compression activated on the modem a speed better than the line
speed should be achieved.
Kermit and Z-modem available for
terminal sessions on lpss20
PPP giving a network connection allowing
use of X-terms and Web Browsers from your home computer.
At the moment dial back is not available though
local calls are relativly cheap, check with Telefonica. If you require
dialback then use 405636 or 405575 for a VT100 terminal style connection,
How to make use of these facilities.
Terminal VT100 Connection:
You Require a Terminal Emulator such as Kermit
configured for VT100 emulation.
Make a connection by typing command ATDT425455
(tone dialing) or ATDP425455 (Pulse dialing) or use script see software
manuel.
On a successful connection you should get a login
prompt.
In some instances, not understood as yet, it
may be that when you make a connection you are met by a string of unrelated
characters instead of the login prompt. In this case hitting the spacebar
a couple of times will bring up the login prompt.
Login using your Sparc username and password.
To obtain a session on your account at the Roque
use telnet or rlogin (i.e. rlogin lpss1)
This gives a suitable connection for Email and
small data transfers using Kermit, Zmodem etc.
Termination of connection is automatic by loging
out of your sessions and subsesions.
PPP Network Connectiopn:
You will require TCP/IP and PPP software, this
is packaged in Windows 95, Linux,OS2 Warp. For Windows 3.* you will require
an add on such as trumpet.
Configure a hostname for your computer
and mail it to tony@ing.iac.es with
your request for a PPP connection.
Configure your software to use TCP/IP protocol
Configure your I/P address as assigned
to you bytony@ing.iac.es .
Domain name is ing-slo.iac.es. (do
not forget the final fullstop)
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
gateway address is 161.72.26.1
Server I/P address is 161.72.26.3
A PPP connection is obtained by entering your
username appended by ppp at the Sparc login prompt. i.e. john becomes johnppp.
Your password remains unchanged.
It is hoped to offer dial back later for those
who require the service for their work but software that listens for a
PPP style connection will be needed. Linux offers this and Microsoft offer
the 95PLUS package to add facilities to Windows 95, other software may
be available for little or no cost.
