| Description: |
3.8-metre dedicated infrared telescope. Following from a comprehensive programme of upgrades undertaken throughout the 1990s, UKIRT produces median image quality of better than 0.5 arcseconds.
UKIRT operates exclusively with one instrument, the Wide-Field Camera (WFCAM). This instrument has four HgCdTe 2k-square arrays and covers 0.2 square degrees in a single exposure. The majority of telescope time is committed to the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) and some other large campaigns, but a small amount of time is reserved for conventional PI-driven programmes. All WFCAM data are processed by the Cambridge Astronomical Survey unit (CASU) and are distributed to users through the WFCAM Science Archive at the Wide-Field Astronomy Unit (WFAU) in Edinburgh.
UKIRT is a flexibly-scheduled telescope. Programmes awarded time may or may not be awarded summit occupancy. If you do receive summit time, you will typically be placed at the summit for of order twice the time required to complete your observations. You observe your own programme when weather conditions (seeing, atmospheric H2O, photometric quality) are consistent with it; and programmes from the flex queue when they are not. When your allocated time is exhausted, you undertake queue observing. If you are not granted summit occupancy, your prepared observations are placed in the flex queue and will be done by summit observers. |
