Conference; THE CENTRAL KPC OF STARBURSTS AND AGNS:THE LA PALMA CONNECTION ============================================================================== ING INSTRUMENTATION IN SEMESTER 2001A General information on ING instrumentation, and guidelines for proposals, can be found in the ING Web Pages at http://www.ing.iac.es/Astronomy/instruments/2001a.html and http://www.ing.iac.es/Astronomy/observing/INGinfo_home.html respectively. Applicants are recommended to refer to these pages for the latest information. Proposals must be submitted on the current PATT2 form, version 02/2000, and should be emailed directly to ingpatt@ing.iac.es. Font sizes on the application form must not be reduced from the style-file defaults; if they are reduced the application will be disregarded. NOTES: Applicants should be aware that occasionally highly rated proposals may not be awarded time due to scheduling constraints. In semester 2001A this may be particularly relevant to proposals competing for GHRIL access, namely NAOMI and INTEGRAL, and for proposals competing for the use of INGRID with NAOMI and at Cassegrain focus. Also INGRID, and therefore NAOMI, will be unavailable during February 2000 due to essential engineering work planned at this time. While Small Fibres will be commissioned on AF2 during 2001A we are not accepting proposals for small fibres. Instead, limited service opportunities will be made available and an announcement of opportunity will be released closer to the commissioning time. We will continue to accept AF2 proposals in 2001A asking for the existing fibre module but discontinue this in 2001B if the small fibre module is successfully commissioned in 2001A. UK/NL applicants are reminded that to encourage proposals for larger time allocations on the WHT, the PATT2 application form allows a 2-page scientific justification for WHT proposals of six or more nights. The second page should be used for the scientific justification for NAOMI backup proposals (more details on NAOMI are given below). The following instrument/detector configurations are available: - Instrument + detector WHT - ISIS BLUE + EEV12 - ISIS RED + TEK - AUX-port + UBVRI + TEK - UES + SITe1 or 2xEEV MOSAIC - PRIME + 2xEEV MOSAIC - AUTOFIB2/WYFFOS + TEK - INTEGRAL/WYFFOS + TEK - INGRID + 1kx1k HgCdTl - NAOMI adaptive optics NAOMI/INGRID will continue to be available at the WHT on a common-user (but shared-risks) basis. Backup programs are no longer required, observers will instead be requested to carry out service programs as backup. - Visitor Insruments: LDSS2 and TAURUS are no longer available as common-user instruments. LDSS2 has been adopted by the University of Durham, contact for further details: Richard Bower (R.G.Bower@durham.ac.uk). The IoA, University of Cambridge is adopting TAURUS; Contact for further details: Richard McMahon (rgm@ast.cam.ac.uk). Those interested in SCAM should contact Michael Perryman (mperryma@astr.estec.esa.nl) INT - WFC + 4xEEV - IDS 235/500 + EEV10 or TEK Applicants please note: * Observing time is allocated in blocks of one week on average. * Observing programmes shorter than 4 nights are not accepted, unless explicitly agreed in advance by the Head of Astronomy or the Director of ING. JKT - direct imaging (2kx2k SITe2) Applicants please note: * The JKT only supports one common-user instrument, and hence private instruments are not accepted. * Observing time is usually allocated in blocks of one week. * Observing programmes shorter than 5 nights are not accepted. ============================================================================== ING NEWSLETTER The ING is pleased to announce the third issue of the ING Newsletter, which is avaiable on the web at: http://www.ing.iac.es/PR/newsletter/ Some highlights from this issue include articles on: * The deepest ground-based image yet! * Discovery of a Type Ia SN progenitor! * Comet LINEAR's disintegration caught on silicon! * INGRID first light * NAOMI progress report Have you considered contributing a science article to the Newsletter? If you have new results based on observations obtained at ING facilities which you think are exciting and important, and which you wish to communicate to the ING user community, please don't hesitate to contact the editorial team or email Javier Mendez (jma@ing.iac.es) directly. ============================================================================== ASTRONOMY JOBS AT THE ING The ING has vacancies for * A Support Astronomer, deadline for applications 15th September 2000 * Marie Curie Research Fellowships (2), in the area 'Exploitation and optimisation of Adaptive Optics techniques for astronomy'. Deadline for applications 20th October 2000 Further details can be found at http://www.ing.iac.es/About-ING/Vacancies/vacancies1.html ============================================================================== THE CENTRAL KPC OF STARBURSTS AND AGNS: THE LA PALMA CONNECTION 7-11 May 2001 A conference organised and financially supported by the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes, La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain To be held from 7-11 May 2001 in the Hotel Hacienda San Jorge, Los Cancajos, La Palma (http://www.hsanjorge.com/) Attendance at the conference will be limited to around 100 participants, and the places will be mostly filled on a first come first served basis. Therefore you are advised to pre-register now, using the form at http://www.ing.iac.es/conferences/centralkpc/ (follow the link to the pre-registration form). Scientific Rationale: Recent advances in high-resolution observations, theory and modeling have focused our attention on the central kiloparsec regions of nearby disk galaxies, which often show profound starburst and/or nonstellar activity, accompanied by intricate gas and dust morphologies and kinematics. The origin and evolution of the phenomena occuring in these central regions, their possible causal interrelationships, links to the host galaxies and the appropriate role they play in galaxy evolution, form an intriguing subject which fuels an explosive rate of publications. This conference will review recent progress and discuss the future strategies on this remarkable research field. Invited reviews: -- Axon Molecular tori in Seyfert galaxies and associated phenomena (obscuration, SF, ion. cones, jets, etc) -- Beckman Opening review (from 1pc to 1 kpc) -- Combes Global vs. nuclear starbursts -- B. Elmegreen Theory of SF in the central kpc -- Heckman X-ray view of the central kpc -- Knapen Gas and stellar kinematics in the central kpc -- Leitherer SF in starbursts, AGN & composite nuclei -- To be confirmed Dynamics of central regions of galaxies -- To be confirmed Modelling the ISM -- To be confirmed Conference summary -- Merritt Relationships of black holes to bulges -- Scoville Gas in the central kpc -- Shlosman Theory and modelling of dynamics in the central kpc Broad topics: - Star formation in the central kpc - Gas & stellar dynamics in the central kpc - X-ray view of the central kpc - Molecular gas and ISM in the central kpc - Molecular tori in Seyfert galaxies and associated phenomena (obscuration, SF, ion. cones, jets, etc) - Modelling the ISM - The starburst phenomenon on different spatial scales - Morphology of the central region Local Organising Committee: - Daniel Bramich (ING) - Bego~na Garcia-Lorenzo (ING) - Johan H.
