Spectral range

The spectrograph is designed to be usable over the range from 3000 Å to 1.1 m. However, it is unfortunately not possible to cover this entire range at once. Tabs. 15 and 16 summarise the free spectral range and order separation at a variety of wavelengths, and can be used to calculate the number of orders that will fit on the detector simultaneously, and to check whether the detector can cover the entire length of the orders. This is discussed in more detail in Section 12. Additionally the STARLINK released programme ECHWIND (see Starlink User Guide No. ??) gives a graphical representation of the detector coverage of the echellogram at any particular echelle central wavelength. (see also Chap. x.)
