Interactive Mode

The user information may be entered interactively, on the captive account, by typing:

ADDRESS_INFO , or simply: ADDRESS

This command executes the address function in `menu' mode: you will be prompted for the required information items. The information is split into a part concerning the user's home institute, and the user's personal information. The minimum information prompted for consists of:

(Keywords appear in bold script.) The tricky entry of this list is the Institute name: The archive data base contains details of a large number of institutes, entered over the years by archive users and the archive manager. At the prompt for the institute name, the user can inspect the list of institutes in the data base. If your institute is included in the list, just enter that name, and the only other items prompted for are a username, computer host (both required for communication via electronic mail), and a phone extension. If the institute does not appear in the list, the user will have to provide additional information, which is described below.

The data base contains with every institute name a `generic' E-mail address, which may look, for instance, like the one of the Kapteyn Institute at Groningen (on INTERNET):

SMTP%"

The address function will substitute the given username and hostname into the indicated fields; thus, users at that institute have to provide only a minimum of information. The `SMTP' part in the above address refers to the local electronic-mail protocol used at the archive node. If the hostname is redundant, a blank hostname may be specified at the prompt: a user at node astro.rug.nl defines: host = " ", while a user at kapteyn.astro.rug.nl fills in: host = kapteyn.

After running through the menu, a request can be submitted automatically to the archive manager to have the information added to the user list, if wanted. Alternatively, one may choose to submit the request at a later stage (for instance after further alterations) with the command:

REQUEST/ADDRESS_INFO

When submitting the request in this way, the user is also prompted for a comment, which may serve to send any additional information or remarks to the archive manager with your request. The comment option is suppressed by using the /NOCOMMENT qualifier with the request function.

Note that a minimum of information is required, and that if some address items have been left undefined, a request/address cannot be done; ARCQUERY simply refuses execution. Further, if a request is not made during the current session, any address information that may have been typed in will be lost on exit unless a the query context is saved (section ).
