GXVG is a DEC VAX machine running under DCL. On the captive account, the user cannot execute any DCL commands; only the commands of the query software are available. However, several aspects of the archive software make use of the DCL protocol; the HELP facility, for instance, is based on the VAX HELP facility.
On entry, the user is prompted for a set of (up to 4) initials. This is an important piece of information, and will be kept in the archive database. Thus, a user may reflect a moment on the question before providing an answer.
After completion of the login procedure, a listing appears of available functions:
To enter the catalogue query software; the subject of the remaining sections of this part III.
Shows an example of a simple archive query session; first-time users may browse through it to get an idea of the function of several arcquery commands.
Shows archive catalogues available. The one of interest here is OBSCAT_LP. The other posibilities ARCINX_LP and WSRTOLD relate to searches of the packet database, or remote access to the Westerbork Radio observations archive in Dwingeloo. Actually, with current fast network links, the WSRT archive can best be accessed by directly logging on to the ARCQUERY account at the Dwingeloo site (Internet node `nfra.nl'). Index searches and remote access to other catalogues are described in ING User Manual XIX.
On-line HELP information about ARCQUERY functions. This HELP facility can also be accessed from inside the ARCQUERY programme itself.
Edit an ARCQUERY initialization file via the EDT or TPU editor. Such an initialization file is executed on entry of the ARCQUERY programme, and can be used to define user-specific symbols and default settings, which are then automatically available at the beginning of each subsequent use of the query software.
This programme enables the user to carry out a large number of pocket-calculator like functions, including the conversion of units. It has its own help-facility.
To logout from the captive account, with control returned to the user's own site, or, if you entered via RLESIS (SPAN), to ESIS.
