Overview

The object of this section is to introduce the investigator to the typical commands used in operating FOS in an observing session. As stated earlier, FOS is run in the ADAM environment, and many of the commands are identical to those used to control the IDS + CCD. Examples are the RUN, GLANCE and PHOTOM commands. The commands which are missing from the FOS repertoire are those which operate many of the IDS functions, e.g. grating angles, collimator focus. Unlike the IPCS, there are few safety precautions, as it is not as `delicate', and there is no real time display.

It should be possible to run FOS without reference to any other guide than this, although this guide cannot be exhaustive, and details of ADAM and CCD routines are to be found in the appropriate manuals.

FOS is run from the observer station, which consists of an ADAM terminal, from which all the commands are issued, a MIMIC display, which shows the status of the A&G box, slit width, above and below slit filters, and dekker positions, and a LEXIDATA, on which the 2-D frame is displayed automatically when an exposure is completed, and the CCD is read out. Once an exposure has finished (and indeed during a subsequent run) the image displayed on the Lexidata can be extracted, calibrated and plotted using the dedicated FOS reduction software.
