Access to the DAS: which terminals?

As an observer, you can control most of the data-acquisition system from a single console; this is a VAXstation mounted in the middle of the observing desk From the VAXstation, you enter commands in a terminal window and receive feedback information both as messages send to the terminal window and via a graphical display - the observer's mimic - running on the VAXstation screen.

The terminal window with which you control the data-acquisition system is also used to control the instruments and, optionally, the telescope. This terminal window runs the command language ICL, for which relevant commands are given in the following sections.

The data-assessment SPARCstation is controlled from its own console. To get data from the DMS to the SPARCstation you must wait for the system computer to finish an observation and then run a program on the SPARCstation to copy over the image.
