The SPARCstation data-evaluation system

A workstation (currently a SPARCstation 2) is provided for very-rapid on-line evaluation of data, using standard reduction software. This machine has a direct connection to the DMS, and can save data to disk (in IRAF's file format) in addition to or in place of the normal archiving on the system computer. Dedicated software is provided to work this link, but the observer must explicitly request the saving of each file of interest; unlike the normal archiving on the system computer ( q.v.), the SPARCstation cannot be set to save observations automatically.

At present the only reduction facilities available on the SPARCstation are SAOimage and IRAF. It is expected that this will cater for most requirements. However, other packages ( e.g. Figaro) might be made available in the future, given availability and sufficient demand.
