STARTUP OF TELESCOPE AND 3220 TELESCOPE CONTROL COMPUTER

  1. Telescope power ON.
  2. Oil pump ON.
  3. Cancel alarm (when it sounds). Occasionally it doesn't but you know you have passed this point when the Red 'Alarm Cancel' at bottom of RH bay goes out and green light in (4) comes on.
  4. Press RESET next to emergency stop knob (green light goes OUT).
  5. Check for other alarms.
  6. Check for obstructions on observers' floor.
  7. Move telescope so that you can get corrector cover off. (Only necessary at f/8.)
  8. Type D D <cr>.

    Look down list of devices and find FX16:. If it is OFF, type

    MA FX16:,ON,,CD=ALL

    and wait for the one line response, then type

    GO JKT

    and wait for the message LOADJKT: END OF TASK 0. If it says FX16:SYS type

    GO JKT and wait for message, either LOADJKT:END OF TASK 0 or CONTROL SYSTEM is already running.

  9. the telescope computer system terminal check control computer is up (asterisk response). If it is not, see the instructions in Section 4.3 of the JKT User Guide.
  10. If you want to work with the telescope West of the pier refer to section 4.3 but you must ask the support astronomer or duty technician first.
  11. Make sure telescope is about a degree away from the zenith in both axes using the engineering mode controls.
  12. Type Zeroset on the UI. Move telescope through the meridian and the zenith to initialise encoders.
  13. Switch to computer control.
  14. If you do not want the default values, set the handset set, guide and increment parameters by typing

    HA/S xx <cr> (arcsec/sec)

    HA/G xx <cr> "

    HA/I xx <cr> (arcsec)

    where xx are values according to taste. The startup values are 30, 3 and 30 respectively.

    Energise the handset by pressing SET/GUIDE/INCREMENT buttons in succession.

  15. Dome lights off.
  16. Close blind in control room.
  17. Open Dome Shutters and mirror petals, in that order.
  18. Select a bright star and enter the coordinates to the user interface. Drive to that object. Activate the TV - see no. 25.
  19. Use SNAFU to correct coordinate zero points.
  20. When star has been centred press the ACK button on the control desk until it goes out.
