Spectral Configurations

OASIS ofters fifteen different spectroscopic modes of varying spectral coverage and resolution. Each mode is described in terms of its resolution (LR, MR and HR for low, medium and high resolution respectively) and its central wavelength (in nm). For example, MR735 is a medium resolution mode centred at 735nm. The following table summarises the resolution, spectral coverage and dispersion of each configuration:

1. A set of 15 filters determines the spectral range of each configuration. Transmission curves for each of the filters can be found here.

2. If you are interested in applying to use the LR610 spectroscopic configuration, please contact Chris Benn in advance of the proposal deadline.

3. Variable dispersion: 3, 11, 35 Å/pixel at 4200, 6000, 8000 Å respectively.

A visual overview of the fifteen spectroscopic configurations is shown below:

The vertical green bar indicates the range of wavelengths that are excluded from the science arm when using the laser guide star system, GLAS. More details can be found here.

Note that on any particular night, up to 12 spectral configurations can be made available.

Spatial Sampling

By placing different enlargers in front of the lenslet array, it is possible to alter the spatial sampling of the IFU. The following table summarises the three spatial samplings and resultant fields of view that are currently offered:

Nomenclature

To uniquely define the combination of the spectral and spatial mode selected, the spatial sampling (in units of 0.01"/lenslet) is appended to the spectral configuration. For example:
  • MR661_09 indicates that the MR661 spectral configuration is being used with the 0.09"/lenslet spatial sampling.
  • HR667_26 indicates that the HR667 spectral configuration is being used with the 0.26"/lenslet spatial sampling.
It is useful to adopt this nomenclature when writing observing proposals.
