ING Publications up to and including 1997

The publication statistics detailed below have been obtained from an analysis of all the refereed astronomical journals. Two approaches have been adopted - a straightforward paper count and a citations count. The sections include:

ING Paper Counts

The number of papers based on data from ING broke the 200 barrier in 1995, at a total of 201. The total in 1996 continued to climb and are only about a dozen papers less in 1997, but the WHT output continues to increase.

The WHT and INT continue to have similar levels of scientific productivity, with 100 and 84 papers respectively in 1996. In the same year, the JKT staged something of a recovery, producing 52 papers. The WHT is now (in 1997) the highest it has ever been at 113 papers.

Comparison of Papers with Other Telescopes

Comparison of numbers of papers published from observations made at the ING with those from other PPARC-supported telescopes (UKIRT, JCMT, UKST and AAT). Year zero is the date from which the telescope first began operation.

Of particular interest is the rapid increase of publications from the WHT, INT and AAT in the first 10 years. The output of the ING telescopes (WHT,INT,JKT) is, for 1996, a total of 236 papers from refereed journals and a total of 225 in 1997.

Papers and Citation Studies

The number of papers in the top 100 of the ISI National Science Indicators citation database as a function of PPARC-supported ground-based telescopes. Note that we have accumulated papers from the JCMT and UKIRT under the heading "Hawaii" and papers from the AAT and UKST under the heading "AAO". The total of all the PPARC-supported telescopes is indicated by the blue curve. This citation study clearly demonstrates the huge impact ING publications have recently had on the world of astronomy.
