ING Research (2000)
D.J. Lennon
During 2000, the ING had its formal research allowance from its
funding agencies (in fact this funding comes from PPARC alone)
increased to 3 FTE of research effort, the previous allowance being 2
FTEs. This new quota brought the ING staff effort in this area to
4 % of its total staff effort and the increase was used to fund
the appointment of two fixed-term research fellows; Johan Knapen and
Romano Corradi. These two new appointments brought the total number
of ING research active staff to 9, consisting of: the Head of
Astronomy (UK), 2 (UK) Research Fellows, 5 (UK) Support Astronomers, 1
(NL) Support Astronomer. During 2000 the ING produced approximately
30 papers in refereed journals (and the same again in non-refereed
publications), which is a 50 % increase on the previous average
paper production (1997-99) indicating that the ING is indeed
delivering on the research effort for which it is accredited.
Crucially, this has resulted in a vastly improved research atmosphere
with some important tangible spin-offs such as the impressive seminar
programme detailed below (over 30 talks in the year 2000 including
speakers such as Ellis, Pettini, Foy, Davies and Charles), a more
vigorous visitor programme, and staff effort available for long-term
student supervision.
