INSTRUMENT RATIONALISATION AT ING - COMMUNITY INPUT SOUGHT
==========================================================

As outlined in our 10-year strategy,

http://www.ing.iac.es/about-ING/strategy/strategy_2013_2022.html

ING plans, in late 2017, to commission at WHT prime focus a powerful
new multi-object spectrograph called WEAVE, see

http://www.ing.iac.es/weave

From 2018 onwards, about 70% of the observing time at the WHT will be
devoted to carrying out a series of surveys with this spectrograph.
The remaining (TAC-allocated) time will be for observations with WEAVE
or other WHT instruments.

In order to focus the observatory's resources on the WEAVE project,
ING is planning a rationalisation of its instrument suite, which will
likely imply a progressive reduction in the number of common-user
instruments/modes offered at the WHT and INT,
starting in semester 2015A. Our initial aim is to retain all
instruments except those in low demand or with limited scientific
output. Once WEAVE is operational, the reduced time available for
non-WEAVE observations will further restrict our ability to deploy
less-demanded instruments. There are currently no plans
to restrict the use of visiting instruments.

To help us ensure that you have continued access to the instrumentation
you need for your research, we invite you to indicate on the link below
which ING instruments/modes you are most likely to use during the
coming years.

Responding to this survey should not take more than five minutes of
your time.

We will collect your answers up to 31 March 2014.

Many thanks in advance,

Marc Balcells
Director ING
