AS OF 1st AUGUST ALL PROPOSALS SUBMITTED DURING SEMESTER 96B ARE DEAD. THIS IS TO COMPLETE THE MOVE TO A FULLY REFEREED SYSTEM, AND TO ALLOW THE CURRENT STATUS OF ALL APPLICATIONS TO BE VISIBLE ON THESE PAGES, TOGETHER WITH AN ACCURATE BREAKDOWN OF NATIONALITY USAGE. THESE PROPOSALS HAVE NOW BEEN WITHDRAWN, PLEASE SUBMIT A NEW APPLICATION UNDER THE NEW SCHEME IF YOU STILL WANT YOUR OBSERVATIONS
The Service programme is meant for people who need short observations (up to three hours) to try new ideas, or complement a PATT or CAT programme. Briefly, the main elements of this scheme are as follows:
With the advent of the current Service Application form (which is more detailed than previous versions) all applications are now dealt with by automatic software. Hence any applications that do not supply sufficient information to describe the instrumentation and weather condition requirements will not be processed into the scheme but instead returned to the applicant for further work.
After submitting a proposal the applicant will immediately receive an email html copy of their application. This should be retained until they have confirmation of successfully entering the scheme (ie a mail message from ING service with a reference code). This normally takes an hour or two whether it has been successfully received into the system or not. If you do not receive a mail message within a day of submitting your proposal please forward your html copy to Stephen Smartt (sjst@ing.iac.es) who will investigate the problem.
The deadlines for service applications are 0 hr on the first day of each month. The referees will endeavour to assess the applications allotted to them within a week. However, PI's should be aware that due to illness, travel (etc) applications may not become active for up-to a month after the deadline.
In the case of genuine targets of opportunity a service form
should be completed and the Service Manager contacted immediately. For the most
urgent cases (eg a galactic supernova discovered that day!) the Service
Manager will arrange for local referee's to assess your application.
Please note,
this SERVICE FORM is the only means whereby
Observations can be requested. Older versions of the ING Service Form will not
be accepted.
The dates and expected instrumentation for service nights on WHT, INT, and JKT for the current semester are liable to change at short notice. Hence prospective users of the service scheme should consult these files before submission of their application. These pages are updated every week.
These summary files detail the current status of service proposals (arranged by telescope and semester), proposal numbers (and time requested) and simple statistics on the usage of service time (by nationality and telescope).
