The ING SERVICE Programme

The aim of the ING Service Programme is to provide astronomers with a means to obtain small sets of observations (up to four hours on the WHT) to try new ideas, or complement a PATT, NL or CAT programme. Briefly, the main elements of the Service Programme are as follows:
  • All proposals are scientifically assessed by representatives of the three user-community time allocation committees (ES, NL, and UK)
  • Monthly deadlines (0 hr on the first day of each month) for receipt of applications
  • Data are made available to applicants through anonymous ftp
  • Proposals are withdrawn from the scheme after a one year period
  • A more detailed description of the scheme is available.

ULTRACAM available for Service observations in November 2003

ULTRACAM will be available for service observations on the WHT on the nights of Nov 2, Nov 10 and Nov 13, 2003. ULTRACAM is a CCD camera designed to provide imaging photometry at high temporal resolution (up to 500 frames per second) in three different colours simultaneously.
The observations will be performed on a shared-risks basis in collaboration with Vik Dhillon (Sheffield) and Tom Marsh (Warwick). ULTRACAM proposals will be refereed on a rolling basis and will be accepted up to and including October 24th 2003.

INT Service Programme no longer available

As part of the restructuring of ING , INT service observing was discontinued at the end of semester 03A (July 31, 2003). JKT service observing was discontinued at the end of semester 02A. WHT service observing will continue.

How to apply

Fill out the application form for the instrument you want to apply for. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMITT THE SAME PROPOSAL MORE THAN ONCE. If you encounter a problem with the online submission please email Service Manager. Within an hour you will receive an email informing you that your proposal has passed safely into the scheme, along with its unique reference code. If your programme does not appear in the status files, and if you do not receive a mail message within a day of submitting your proposal please contact the Service Manager. If necessary, send in a finder chart. You will be informed soon after the next deadline of the scientific grading of your proposal.

Targets of Opportunity

In the case of genuine targets of opportunity a service form should be submitted and the Service Manager should be contacted by email [service@ing.iac.es ].
Please tick the Target_of_Opportunity box on the service form. For the most urgent cases (eg a galactic supernova discovered that day!) the Service Manager will arrange for local referees to assess your application.
