Starting Up

The following procedure assumes that the telescope and control systems are fully down. It is important to follow the procedure strictly in the order presented below. Usually, when you arrive at the telescope in the afternoon, it has been left by the engineering staff in a "ready to go" status. If this is the case, then you simply need to load the correct filters, zeroset the telescope (see below) and fill the cryostat at the correct time.

Starting Up The TCS

On the TCS, right click on a blank part of the screen and then click "Start Terminal".

In the window that appears, click on "LPAS1" and then "OK".

Login using the following:

USERNAME: JKT_LOGIN
PASSWORD: On sticker

At the prompt type: START

This will load the telescope status display and the USER> prompt.

Zeroset The Telescope

All of the following is done via the JKT control panel.

Using the "HA+", "HA-", "DEC+" and "DEC-" buttons next to the rate knobs, drive the telescope as follows:

1) For ~12 R.A. minutes in the HA+ direction
2) For ~3 degrees in the DEC+ direction

In the TCS window, type:

USER>zeroset ha tar
USER>zeroset dec tar

Now drive the telescope with the buttons as follows:

1) In the DEC- direction until the beep from the TCS
2) In the HA- direction until the beep from the TCS

Put the telescope in computer mode by turning the appropriate key.

Starting Up The DAS

On the DAS, at the SUNMICROSYSTEMS prompt, login as follows:

USERNAME: jktobs
PASSWORD: On sticker

...wait...

In the pink window, type:

jktobs@lpss12>obssys

At the first menu, choose system 3.
At the second menu, choose SIT2 (option 6).

Then type:

jktobs@lpss12>startobssys

Starting Up The ICS

On the ICS, at the SUNMICROSYSTEMS prompt, login as follows:

USERNAME: jktobs
PASSWORD: On sticker on DAS screen

...wait...

In the pink window, type:

jktobs@lpss10>obssys

At the first menu, choose system 3.
At the second menu, choose SIT2 (option 6).

Then type:

jktobs@lpss10>startobssys

Screen Saver

On both the ICS and the DAS, you may want to turn the screen saver off. In an open bit of the screen, right click to bring up a menu and go to "Properties...". Change the "Category:" to "Miscellaneous" and turn the "Screen Saver:" off. Make sure that you click on "Apply" before you exit.
