POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH
ASSISTANT - PPARC FUNDED POST
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research position at the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes to work with Dr. Danny Lennon and collaborators in the general subject area of massive stars and galaxy evolution. The successful applicant will focus on the analysis; interpretation and modelling of high resolution ultra-violet and optical spectra of massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud obtained using
HST/STIS and various ground-based facilities. Specific research topics will include studies of one or more of the following: (a) the influence of rotation on the evolution and surface compositions of massive stars; (b) mass-loss rates in massive stars and the
wind momentum luminosity relationship; (c) spectral synthesis of star-forming and starburst galaxies. Part of the successful applicant's time will be available for independent research and a small fraction (not more 10%) may be allocated to observatory duties.
Candidates must hold, or be about to obtain, a Ph.D. degree. Technical expertise should preferably include one or more of the following: (a) observing experience with HST or ground-based optical/near-IR telescopes; (b) experience with data reduction or analysis of spectroscopic data; (c) experience in modelling stellar atmospheres or winds. The post is offered on a 3 year fixed term contract and is available immediately.
The ING is based on the Spanish Canary Island of La Palma, where it operates the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope, the largest and most advanced optical telescope in Europe, the 2.5-m Isaac Newton Telescope and the 1-m Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope. We have excellent research facilities at our Sea Level Offices in Santa Cruz de La Palma where the successful applicant will be based. Starting pay will be £18,868, with the possibility of higher starting pay for exceptional candidates. As the post will be based in La Palma, PPARC’s overseas terms and conditions will apply. These are analogous to those of the Civil Service and include the payment of overseas allowances, the provision of rent-free accommodation and a relocation package.
