Accessing the Internet

The IAC provide a 2Mbs-1 link from the island of La Palma to Tenerife.  This link is shared not only by the other telescopes on the ORM but also by the users in Edificio Mayantigo in Santa Cruz.  Our geographical location places many restrictions on the type of Internet connection that is available to us.  Thus the speed of access to the Internet may not be what you are accustomed with from your home Institution.

Nevertheless, you may use the link to access the Internet and your home Institutions whenever you like.  There are no limitations on how much data can be transferred to or from the ING but due to the nature of the link we do ask that you exercise some consideration when using this service.

Access to the Internet is supported using standard Internet protocols such as TELNET, FTP, HTTP and SSH (version 1).

Faults

If during your stay you experience a problem accessing the Internet or your home Institution, please feel free to log the problem in the Fault Database.  To help us diagnose the nature of the fault you should include as much information as possible about what you were doing when the fault occurred and the time of the fault.

The ING is only responsible for the network between and within the WHT, INT and JKT as well as the network between the SLO and the ORM.  The connection to the Internet is maintained by the IAC and thus sometimes we may not be able to offer you an immediate solution to your problem.  This would be the case if the problem occurred at the weekend or before 09.00Hrs or after 15:30Hrs.
